San Francisco BookPALS in the Community: Día de los Niños
April 20, 2015
BookPALS San Francisco helps coordinate the celebration for Children’s Day, Book Day – in Spanish known as Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros. This year the celebration was held at Parque Niños Uniqos in the Mission District.
The event is a celebration of all things literacy, books and children. For many children, the highlight of the day is browsing for a free brand-new book to take home! Children hungry for more books could borrow titles from the San Francisco Public Library Bookmobile and get a library card issued from the wi-fi enabled pedal-powered library, Spoke & Word.
The live stage thrilled kids and adults alike with fantastic programming. Dr. Marisol Munos-Kiehne, host of the Nuestros Niños educational call-in radio program, acted as master of ceremony. She introduced riveting performances including Mexican Dance by Maria Luna, an all-ages Literacy Parade, and a family dance party hosted by Pulsing Word. DJ PakíPayá spun multicultural music that had the crowd grooving.
Thanks to the dedicated organizing committee, partners and sponsors for this year’s event. A special thanks to BookPALS’ fellow planners — First Book, Jumpstart, Pulsing Word, San Francisco Friends School, San Francisco Public Library and Raising a Reader.
