New York BookPALS Read Across America Reading with Fatima Ptacek
Fatima Ptacek, Voice of Dora the Explorer and Star of Oscar Award- Winning Short ‘Curfew,’ Participates in Read Across America Day with Bilingual Reading and Book Donation. Reading is co-hosted by children’s literacy organizations Brooke Jackman Foundation and Screen Actors Guild Foundation BookPALS. On Friday, March 1, 2013, The Brooke Jackman Foundation (BJF) and the Screen Actors Guild Foundation’s BookPALS teamed up for Read Across America Day with rising star Fatima Ptacek, the 12-year-old voice of the internationally beloved cartoon character Dora the Explorer and a lead actress in the 2013 Oscar award-winning short ‘Curfew,’ for a reading of Dr. Seuss and No More Por Favor at the Brooke Jackman Library at PS 111 in Manhattan. Seventy-five kindergarten students will participate and each will leave with a book donated by BJF. BookPALS is founded on a clear premise: children must be exposed to the magic of books in order to develop a love of reading. The world of literacy and literature is then opened to these children by the very people who make books come alive through their talent and training. Who better to instill that love than actors, gifted in the art of storytelling? Through our more than a decade long focus on early literacy we have identified several key obstacles that many children, especially those for whom English is a second language, face in their developmental process. In addition to our core reading aloud program, we have expanded the BookPALS program to address these primary obstacles through innovative programming that reinforces the BookPALS mission.
