Arizona PencilPALS a big hit during the 2011-12 School Year

PencilPALS makes reading and writing a first-person experience for elementary and middle school children. Each child has an opportunity to write and illustrate his or her own letters and stories. The letters are then mailed to a PencilPAL, a Performing Artist for Literacy in Schools: volunteer performers from the BookPALS program with whom the children can share their thoughts about favorite books and school happenings. Mountain View PencilPALS Program Hosts Parents

On May 10, 2012, Mountain View School hosted a family PencilPALS party.  Families were invited to dinner at the school to hear about the writing program and see the letters that their students had written and received since the beginning of the year. Karen O’Keefe, reading coach, explained the program to the parents and outlined the specific steps the teachers had taken to teach the proper way to write a friendly letter.  Fourth grade teachers, Diane Distler and Jenna Mott and Stacey Smith, helped serve dinner and mingled with the families who were delighted to review the letters...
