PencilPALS Party: PS 16 (Queens)
After writing letters for more than six months, PencilPAL volunteers and their students finally met today at PS 16 in Corona, Queens. The class was excited to share their writing samples with volunteers while munching on some much loved local pizza. BookPALS from far and wide joined us at the SAG-AFTRA offices in Midtown Manhattan on June 13th. BookPALS discussed classroom experiences and shared stories about their favorite books, all while enjoying coffee and pastries. A portion of the afternoon was spent discussing Summer Reading opportunities. BookPALS signed up for WIN afterschool reading, YMHA afterschool programs, and Special events for Pre-K YAI schools. NE BookPALS didn’t slow down during this recent school vacation week! It created opportunities for new volunteers to get involved and read to students at the Bentley School in Salem, MA, who attended a week of programming that included academics, sports, and enrichment. Local actor Jeff Bellin entertained 1st through 3rd graders with his telling of Mucky Moose and I Need my Monster, while Constance Shute read a novel to the older children.

Every month, a dedicated team of BookPALS meet at Mass General Hospital in downtown Boston to bring a little drama and fun to the children in the pediatric ward. This group of actor readers, led by former New England BookPALS coordinator Jane Turner Michael, go door to door, offering their time and talent to kids who are in desperate need of a respite from the challenges they face on a daily basis.
