Our Book Basket program was a huge success last year at several schools. Pictured above is an example of a Book Basket that a classroom will receive.
What it is:
·Book Baskets are a small basket of books that NY BookPALS donates to classrooms in a school where a BookPALS reader has been placed and reads regularly.
·Book Baskets ensures that our literacy program supports the teaching going on in the class!
·Book Baskets are made possible by generous donations to NY BookPALS.
·Book Baskets are made of books that teachers help to choose. Teachers are given the option of creating a “Wish List”.
·Book Basket possible themes are; author studies, poetry studies, science, and social studies.
How it works:
This book basket is a gift from the BookPAL to the classroom where a volunteer BookPAL reads each week. BookPALS is a volunteer literacy program sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. The volunteer reader will read these books to the class and leave them so they can read them and enjoy them again and again.
Kris Coop, our BookPAL currently performing in Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, is pictured talking to students involved with the Book Basket Program.
The BookPAL reader gives his/her time to read to the class because BookPALS believe that reading is the key to your future. We want classrooms to have fun listening to our stories and to read as much as they can. So that as many children as possible can be exposed to these stories, we ask that the books remain with the school if the teacher should leave for any reason. Teachers might want to “trade” baskets with other BookPALS classes in the school. We try to vary the baskets so the children can enjoy many different stories.
How you can help:
We are actively seeking donations for funding for these books. Please make checks out to: Screen Actors Guild Foundation/NY BookPALS Book Basket Program. You can mail the checks to: NY BookPALS, SAG, 12 th Floor, 360 Madison Avenue, NY, NY 10017
If you know of a school that wants to get involved with the program:
Any school that wants to take part in the program will first need to become a BookPALS school. Please ask the principal or librarian of the school to contact the NY Coordinator of BookPALS for more information. [email protected] , 718-833-0316.
We aim to have another wonderful Book Basket Program in the Fall and we need your help to make this happen!
