Atlanta BookPALS held its 7th Annual Reader Training Workshop at the Buckhead Library on December 8th, 2007. It was one of the most inspiring, enthusiastic groups ever!
Author Evelyn Coleman with Atlanta BookPAL Claudia Anthony (Miss Black Georgia of 2006)
We would like to thank the Buckhead Library for allowing us to use their large conference room for this event, and Starbucks and Manager Joy David for providing coffee and the cutest gingerbread mitten cookies I ever saw!
We would also like to thank First Book and Random House Books for their wonderful book donation of 2,500 books, which were distributed to BookPALS at the Workshop!
We were extremely honored to have Author Evelyn Coleman and her family (husband Talib Din and daughter Sankofa) attend the event after receiving the Trail Blazer Award from Dekalb Friends of the Library Book Club Conference earlier that very day! Several years ago, Evelyn received the 38th Annual Georgia Author of the Year for Children's Literature and has also been awarded the King Baudouin Cultural Exchange Fellowship Award.
Evelyn has written many books. Her latest book is American Girl Addy, Shadow on Society Hill. She also wrote Born in Sin (which was edited by Dick Jackson, who discovered Judy Blume!), Circle of Fire, and White Socks Only, which is featured on the Screen Actors Guild Foundation Storyline Online website located at www.storylineonline.net. On January 8th, Evelyn's book, The Freedom Train (for middle-schoolers) comes out.
But it doesn't stop there. To top things off, Evelyn creates designer covers and coordinated clothing and accessories for the backs of wheelchairs, including wedding couture for brides/grooms! Check out her designs at www.wheelynicecovers.com and you will truly be amazed with Evelyn's creativity and thoughtfulness!
Evelyn has accomplished so much, yet she remains one of the sweetest, most humble people I have ever met. To find out more about her books, please visit her website at www.evelyncoleman.com.
