What is the NY BookPALS Group Read program?

Our Group Read program is special as it happens only once a month at two schools in New York City. These are PS 52 in Brooklyn and PS 230 in the Bronx.Four volunteer BookPAL readers go to these schools once a month to read to 4-5 classes each!

Terri Kelsey, a regular reader at PS 52, is pictured with her certificate of appreciation for all of the great work she has done over the years!

Here are some common questions about the Group Read program in New York:

What is a typical day like when you go to do a GR school?

Each school is different. This is a typical day at PS 230 in the Bronx:

1. Readers meet at 8:30am at a location on the upper west side of Manhattan. They take a car service to the school.

2. When they arrive, they go straight to the library and choose the books they will be reading this day. (Some BookPALS prefer to bring their own books that they have chosen in advance.)

3. The librarian at each school gives each volunteer reader a schedule of classes where they will be reading on this special day.

4. At the end of the day, the BookPALS return back to Manhattan via a car service!

How many schools are involved in this program? There are currently two schools involved in the GR program.

Do I have to choose the books in advance? A BookPAL does not need to choose books in advance. Some prefer to do this, as they will be familiar with the material they will be reading to the students.

Who are the GR coordinators and how can I reach them in case an audition/booking comes up at the last minute? Barbara Mundy is the amazing BookPALS Group Read Coordinator at PS 52. Susan Tabor coordinates our special program at PS 230. Please contact the NY Book PALS coordinator for more information if you are interested in taking part. (email: [email protected])
