BookPALS End of Year Party and Awards Dinner

Friday, June 30 2006 @ 04:59 PM EDT

BookPALS and educators enjoyed a pot-luck end of the year party at coordinator, Ellen Dean's home. Everyone shared stories and ideas and went home with door prizes and full stomachs.

Vonnie Thompson received the BookPAL of the Year award for the 2005-2006 school year. Vonnie has managed to take time from her workday to be a BookPAL reader during her lunch hour. She also volunteered for every special event and read on the Gardner's Story Box phone line. Thank you, Vonnie, for your enthusiastic participation in the BookPALS Literacy program!

Elayne Stein, who has been a BookPAL in the Arizona program since its inception in 1998, received an appreciation plaque in honor of her retirement from BookPALS. Elayne read to thousands of children who enjoyed hearing "Nana" read in her many dialects and voices. Although Nana says she is retiring from reading to 150 children per week, she has already agreed to read once a month. It's hard to quit cold turkey! BookPALS love their kids as much as the kids love them. Thanks, Nana, for your support of BookPALS through the years.

Ellen Dean, Coordinator, presents Elayne Stein with her appreciation gift.
