The second annual Isaac Perez Race to Read served as the kick off event for Nevada Reading Week. BookPALS Lisa Illia, Mary Redman and Barbara Bidell treated the students at Ruth Fyfe Elementary to an assembly on Monday, February 28th.

The Isaac Perez Race to Read is a reading incentive program named in honor of a janitor who was killed at the school three years ago. The program provides prizes to students who read for the greatest number of minutes over the next five weeks. The top three winners in each grade level will win one of three $25:00 gift certificates to Toys R’ Us, Peter Piper Pizza or Best Buy. The prizes were provided courtesy of a $500.00 grant awarded to BookPALS by the Clark County Education Association Community Foundation. Special thanks go out to Kevin Nielson with CCEACF for all his efforts. BookPALS would also like to thank Findlay Volkswagen in the Valley Auto Mall in Henderson for supporting the CCEACF in this endeavor. Special thanks go out to Martin Norris, Promotions Director at Findlay Volkswagen, for all his effort in the funding and promoting of the project. Thanks to the generous donation, the class in each grade level that averages the greatest number of minutes read will be treated to an ice cream party. Winners will be announced during a second assembly at the school on April 8th.
