White Socks Only

Written by Evelyn Coleman, illustrated by Tyrone Geter

Recommended Ages: 5 6 7 8 9

The girl listens intently as her grandmother tells a favorite story... In her youth, in Mississippi, she (Grandmother) got all dressed-up to go to town with only one mission in mind: to see if it was hot enough outside to fry an egg on the sidewalk. She tested the theory and it was proven true. Before heading home, she decided to get a drink at the nearest fountain, but the sign read, "Whites Only." So she took off her shoes (and in her white socks), went up to the drinking fountain to get a drink. Soon a large white man grabs her, pushes her to the ground, threatens (and does) beat her--all because she chose to use that fountain! By this time, a crowd had gathered to see what was happening, but the Chicken Man came to her rescue. As a result, the sign was removed...permanently!
