The Dot
Written by Peter H. Reynolds, illustrated by
Recommended Ages: 6 7 8
Vashti is convinced that she can't draw. At the end of art class, her paoer is still blank. The teacher suggests:"Just make a mark and see where it takes you." So with force (and attitude), Vashti marks her paper. The teacher looks at her paper and says, "Now sign it." (Vashti knows she can do that.) Days later, Vashti is surpised to find her DOT framed, and on the classroom wall. That night, Vashti opens her paints and begins painting many dots...At the school's Art Show (where the dots are on display), a little boy compliments Vashti on her work, but tells her:"...can't draw a straight line with a ruler." She responds: "Show me." The boy draws a line and then he is asked to "Sign it." The message: Make your mark...in whatever form.
