Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

No one captures the essence of childhood as expertly as author Kevin Henkes. His delightful books have charmed young readers for years. The pen and ink drawings colored in spiffy pastels are full of fun, with sly expressions worth noting. Without being didactic, his stories illustrate important values and lessons we would like children to learn. In this story, Lilly is so taken with her new purple plastic purse and her desire to show it off to her classmates, that she disrupts the class and interrupts Mr. Slinger's lesson. Her rush to judgment of Mr. Slinger's actions leads to further misery for Lilly, but as in all of Henkes' books, the problems are resolved and all ends happily.

The tale of Miss Rumphius, who after her retirement as a librarian, plants lupines all over New England, is a life well spent. This truly is one of my all-time favorite books. It is particularly effective for a discussion about the environment. Bring in a nonfiction book about flowers and let the kids identify their favorite flower.
